Columbus Land Port of Entry
Columbus, New Mexico
Concept level design for a new Land Port of Entry at the site of an existing LPOE just south of Columbus New Mexico, a dusty village made famous a century ago by the incursion of Pancho Villa. The design would create a net-zero-energy Port of Entry, incorporating extensive passive and active solar design elements. The concept utilizes sophisticated energy modeling to simulate the dynamic interactions between the building and its environs. Daylighting and buoyancy-induced natural ventilation are among the passive devices. Additionally, a thermal basement harnesses for passive heating and cooling the diurnal temperature swing long utilized in the desert southwest by native Americans in adobe and earth-sheltered structures.
